Few places on Earth look like storybook illustrations, and Neuschwanstein is one of those. Nestled atop a rolling hill at a breathtaking site deep in the German Alps, it seems like it just came straight out of a fairy tale! No wonder, it was the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Of course an inside tour of the palace is not to be missed (upon request).
Deeply impressed, we continue to Oberammergau, the picturesque village on Ammer River, known for centuries as a centre for woodworking. Admire the art of ornately painting the facades of buildings, the 'fresco' tradition ( Lüftlmalerei in german), that spilled over from baroque Italy into the foothills of southern Germany. In fact, it’s difficult to imagine a typical Bavarian village without these opulent adornments to their buildings. This pretty village is also famous for its 380-year tradition of mounting “Passion Plays”. Free time to explore on your own. Don’t miss the opportunity to shop some unique souvenirs.
Right afterwards, we drive to Linderhof Palace, the "Royal Villa" of Ludwig II where he actually lived for several years. Tour of the palace with a local castle guide (the presence of a guide is optional), and then you’ll have time to stroll in the palace gardens before driving back to your hotel in Munich.
