On this full-day tour you’ll have the opportunity to visit some of the most important archaeological sites and monuments in North-Eastern Greece such as the great Amphipolis Lion statue and the Unesco World Heritage Site of Phillipi. Discover landmarks of glorious history, taste wines from the PGI Agora in Drama Prefecture and great Greek cuisine!
Less than two hours drive, in North-Eastern Greece, on the ancient route linking Europe and Asia- the Via Egnatia- lie the remains of Philippi. We visit, the archaeological museum and the archaeological site of Philippi, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2016. The city developed as a “small Rome” and prospered in the Roman imperial era. Later, it became an important centre of early Christianity, following the visit of the Apostle Paul, which made Philippi a place of pilgrimage. The first Christian church in Europe was founded here and Lydia was notable as the first European to be baptized there.
Right afterwards we move to Prefecture of Drama, to visit AGORA a Protected geographical indication (PGI) where lies one of the most known wineries in Greece. Here you will have a wine tasting before your lunch at a traditional Greek tavern with local recipes.
Located on a plain near Mt. Pangaion and the river Strymon, the Athenian colony of Amphipolis was founded in 437 BCE and prospered due to the Pangaion gold mines. Here, we stop at the Lion of Amphipolis which in antiquity, stood on a burial mound. In the distance, we can see the excavation site of a grave that is believed to be, the final resting place for family members or a general, of Alexander the Great.
Following the tours we move to a seafront village, where you will enjoy your coffee or tea!
