5 days / 4 nights
People of Thessaloniki are well known to be fine dinners (“kalophagades”). Any visit here is to be completed with a good meal. The long history of the place and the cultural blend throughout the centuries developed a gastronomic tradition worthy to try. On this tour you will take a glimpse of everyday life in historic neighborhoods, and you’ll discover the common and the less common gastronomic treasures of the city.
Day 1 : Arrival day
Arrival at Thessaloniki's airport and private transfer to your 5-star hotel. Enjoy some free time before your welcome dinner.
Day 2 : The taste of the town
We start early and we skip the hotel breakfast. Around 8 o'clock in the morning we arrive at Aristotelous Square, the heart of the town, for a typical street breakfast. We go on walking in the centre of the town among the historical sites and, of course, the open food markets of “Modiano” and “Kapani”. The walking tour ends at the area of the White Tower to have lunch at a historical restaurant that serves greek cuisine and has a great variety of exquisite greek beers (“zithos” in Greek) and wine. The afternoon is free for you to enjoy the town. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Archaeological Museum or the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Both are home to some of the most amazing ancient and Middle Age exhibitions. Early in the evening we meet at one of the best wine bars for a dégustation menu of greek cheese, cured meat and wine. Late at night we end the day with traditional “patsas” soup, that is usually endeavored very late at night or in the first morning hours.
Day 3 : At the nearby outskirts
At 9 o'clock in the morning we depart from the hotel to visit a village where the local cooperation of women produces a variety of traditional food products from Pontos. We continue at the establishments of the “Souroti” plant, the most famous spring water in Greece. At noon we visit the winery of “Gerovassiliou estate” that produces some of the best wines in Greece. There, and after a brief tour in the Wine Museum and production plant, we have lunch with wine dégustation. In the afternoon we lodge at a beach bar to enjoy the sea and the view to the mountain Olympos in the sunset (swimming in the sea is possible). Later in the evening we have a dinner impromptu with fresh fish caught by the local fishermen.
Day 4 : The historical neighborhoods of Thessaloniki
At 9 o'clock in the morning we depart from the hotel and drive to “Ano Poli” (Upper town with the Citadel). After a brief tour at the Castle walls, the Monastery and the Old Town we enjoy “Tsipouro & Meze” at a local “Koutouki” (a typical small tavern). In the afternoon we enjoy a Greek coffee at the city center. Rest of the afternoon at leisure. In the evening we visit the area of Kalamaria and one of the city’s oldest fish taverns where you will have an all- about- fish dinner, by the sea.
